This bold red was a nice find at Trader Joes that I found on sale and am glad that I did. Monastrell (also known as Mourvèdre in France) is one of the three grapes in a popular blend called GSM. It is known for it’s deep and bold characteristics and is traditionally dark red or black fruits with gamey-ness that can manifest itself as earthy or smokey.
This bottle has notes of deep blackberry, violet and smokey cedar. It is a medium-long finish and not overpowering.
I think this wine could fool a sophisticated wine drinker into believing you’re drinking a $40+ bottle. My only complaint is that at times, it felt a bit watery and lacked the true potential of the flavor.
As mentioned, pair with any type of smoked meats/BBQ and it will perfectly compliment all of the flavors in the wine.
